SkyyHook: ‘Hip Hop is a Blood Sport, Not Everyone is Supposed to Make it Out of the Arena’

Skyyhook The Industry Cosign

There are very few individuals that can connect with me on any level at any time and you’re about to meet one of them. I had the pleasure of speaking to her on the phone ONE time and we talked for hours and the only reason the conversation ended was because she had to tend to one of her 30 jobs. The second time we talked on the phone, it was another few hours spent talking and, I swear, the ONLY reason the conversation ended was because, the phone battery yelled at me (While plugged in, mind you!) and warned me that it was about to disconnect us, so I had to end it before Mr. iPhone ended it for me!

I can’t even write a proper introduction because the intro would be a story in itself, so, the best thing that I can do is just lead you right to the interview because I would be doing you a disservice by writing more words than I have to…..

So, without further adieu, this is Skyyhook and if you don’t know who she is, then you only have yourself to blame….

What set you on your path to your career choice and how did you actually get in the entertainment industry?

Oh gosh…what set me on my career path is a long story! The short version is I figured out in the 5th grade that I wanted to be a writer. I just never gave up on the idea of it. And music is my personal drug of choice… so my desire to work in and around it was always more of a need than anything.

I actually got started a long time ago working on a video show. I was hanging out with a friend who was working backstage when the show’s producer asked if i wanted to be interviewed about the super fest that I was at. I agreed, and while I was being interviewed, one of the music groups came walking by. I figured since I had a mic and a camera that was rolling I might as well take advantage of it! So, I stopped the group and started interviewing them right there. Long story short… I had a contract to host the show by the end of the week.

What are some of the difficulties you face, in your many job titles, on a regular basis?

To be honest.. At this point, I would have to say a lack of sleep and eating properly. Health has been a serious concern for me over the last year or so. This whole notion of ‘they sleep we grind’ is for the birds. You just run yourself down that way. I’m trying to do better this year.

But other than that, I think I would have to say, never having time to do all of the things that you want to do. When you wear so many hats, there is always something else for you to do. It’s sort of like when you take everything out of your closet. Yeah your closet is sparkling clean…but the rest of your room is a wreck. So, it can sometimes feel like you’re never going to get to the bottom of your work load. Leaves little time for friendships and family life and that can be very frustrating.

As a contributing editor for various sites over the years, how do you feel about the overall general mindset of how news (Or what’s labeled as news) is reported, specifically online?
